Tablet PCs for enterprise customers

As tablet pc shoppers and IT managers discover the TabletKiosk website, I sometimes swear that can hear audible gasps over the internet when they find  out the price tags of our machines.

With so many IT professionals currently discussing and asking advice about tablet deployment plans, I’d like to take this opportunity to explain how TabletKiosk differentiates its product line and business plan from the popular consumer tablets currently on the market.

So let’s start here…
In the midst of this ever-changing environment, TabletKiosk has attracted and maintained a customer base whose buying considerations extend well beyond the price tag.

Since 2003, TabletKiosk has manufactured and distributed Tablet PCs to enterprise customers working in Healthcare, Hospitality, Control Systems, Field Force Automation and Government vertical markets. The majority of our customers run industry-specific, enterprise software applications (ESA) including Electronic Health Records, Point of Sale (POS) and Diagnostic System Automation. We don’t make laptops, cel phones, routers or mp3 players. For us, it’s all tablets, all the time.

Longer Than Average Life Cycles
1) To extend the Return on Investment (ROI) investment for our customers, all TabletKiosk products incorporate longer than average lifecycles between product refreshes and utilize components from our partners’ embedded roadmaps to ensure long term availability. In fact, for some of our largest deployments, a 100% consistent Bill of Materials (BOM) over the course of several years is a mandatory factor in the Scope of Work.

2) To address the stringent Return on Investment (ROI) requirements for our enterprise customers, TabletKiosk maintains a business model and product development lifecycle that is inherently different from companies that market their products to end consumers.
Because most IT purchases are large-scale endeavors that must meet a specific ROI thresholds, TabletKiosk designs its systems with a minimum three (3) year lifecycle to maximize the cost of ownership.
This is very different from the consumer Tablet manufactures who announce upgraded products every 6-9 months (and consequently wind up discontinuing availability and support for older products).

Backwards Compatibility

The TabletKiosk product ecosystem, which incorporates backwards compatible accessories, permanent and temporary mounting solutions and interchangeable scanner modules reinforces TabletKiosk’s commitment to offer quality, value-based products to the enterprise market. We understand that the majority of our customers are using our Tablet PCs for more than just answering emails or downloading videos which is why the ecosystem of accessories is so important to our line.
Service and Support

TabletKiosk is a US-based company and does not outsource its service or support. All technical and customer support is handled in our Torrance, CA office. When you call the TabletKiosk office, the phone is answered by a live person who is 100% committed to our product line. For every support issue that is logged, TabletKiosk assigns a dedicated tech support rep to that particular project. That tech support rep stays with the product until the problem is resolved. If fact, it is likely that the person you spoke with on the phone will be the person handling the repair.

Lastly, to further our commitment to providing the highest quality of products and service in the industry, all systems undergo three stages of QC inspections prior to shipment, resulting in an approximate 2% average failure rate at the customer level. This is far above the industry average for reliability.

I don’t know if any of this resonates with how you look at purchasing IT equipment for your company but I hope that it sparked your interest. If you have any questions at all, I am happy to help you out by providing case studies, white papers and product comparison grids.

SoftKinetic has teamed up with Intel to enable “perceptual computing,” or using more senses to interact with computers. To that end, it is providing a 3D gesture-recognition camera for Intel to integrate into its collection of perceptual computing technologies by the end of next year.

Belgium-based SoftKinetic is building what it calls the world’s smallest 3D camera that recognizes gestures. It is based on time-of-flight technology, where it maps a room in three dimensions by sending out signals into the space and measuring how long it takes them to bounce back. SoftKinetic showed the tiny camera off in an ultrabook computer at the Computex trade show in Taiwan. The depth cameras are expected to debut in the second half of 2014.

Intel will license technology from SofKinetic, including the Iisu middleware for close-range gesture tracking. Intel will include the SoftKinectic technology in the Perceptual Computing Software Development Kit, which will make it easy for computer makers to integrate perceptual computing into their PCs, notebooks, desktops and other devices.

The depth technology in the SDK works with the Creative Interactive Gesture Camera that uses the SoftKinetic DepthSense 3D time-of-flight technology. The kit enables gesture recognition, voice recognition, and face tracking as close as six inches from the screen.

“We are excited to contribute our technology to the Intel Perceptual Computing Program not only toward the developer community but also to manufacturers of Intel platforms,” said Michel Tombroff, CEO of SoftKinetic. “This expanded collaboration with Intel will accelerate the adoption and proliferation of intuitive, engaging and personalized experience to the consumers.”

SoftKinetic has been working on hardware and software related to gesture recognition for eight years. The company also announced that it has integrated its 3D camera into a tablet.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day

image

The augmentative market has always been an important one for TabletKiosk, and so today we honor our customers who use our Tablet PCs as non-traditional, augmentative/alternative communication devices (AAC).

Whether you participate in a public or private event to mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day, on May 9, we encourage designers, developers, usability professionals, and everyone else to take an hour to experience first-hand the impact of digital accessibility (or lack there of).

Go Mouseless For An Hour

Go ahead and unplug your mouse and only use your keyboard alone (tab/shift tab, arrow keys, enter and spacebar) to navigate and interact with your favorite websites and applications. If you use a touchpad, trackpad or similar input method, disable it, and use the keyboard instead.

Developers and designers, we encourage you to visit a site you were involved in creating and take it for a test-drive.

Surf The Web With A Screen Reader For An Hour

There are a number of free/open source screen readers available for Windows users. One of the more popular ones is NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA). Take a bit of time beforehand to download the software and learn some of NVDA’s documented basic keystrokes.

On May 9, unplug your mouse (blind users do not use the mouse), launch your screen reader, and spend an hour using some of your favorite sites strictly using the keyboard alone (tab/shift tab, arrow keys, enter and spacebar) and not the mouse/trackpad. Why not turn off your screen and depend strictly on the information conveyed by the screen reader.

Developers and designers, we encourage you to visit a site you were involved in creating and take it for a test-drive.

Learn About And Use Accessibility Features

The Windows 7 Operating System has a number of built-in accessibility features, Take an hour to explore what these are and try them out on the Web. In the case of the mobile devices, why not try using some of your favorite apps with different accessibility features enabled.

Military Drug Trials Group Eliminates Errors and Inefficiencies using Electronic Data Capture and Tablet PCs Infectious Disease

Federal Government Organization Achieves Cleaner and Faster Clinical Study Data Using Tablet PCs From TabletKiosk®

image

Torrance, CA, April 16, 2013 —

Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP), a worldwide network of Department of Defense (DoD) clinical and research centers that have collaborated to investigate infectious diseases challenges facing the military, revealed that it is using Tablet PCs from TabletKiosk to conduct a completely paperless clinical study resulting in 50% time savings and 100x fewer queries.

The clinical trial process was previously paper-based and involved almost 20,000 paper forms, which resulted in slower data capture into back-end systems for reporting, and more errors/queries.Capture 2

IDCRP’s current electronic data capture (EDC) solution, deployed in Afghanistan, Kenya and Djibouti, incorporates the Sahara Slate PC® i500 running Mi-Forms mobile-forms technology from Mi-Co to create a comprehensive, all in one data collection unit.

The Sahara Slate PC® i500 is a slate Tablet PC powered by the Intel® Core™ i7 processor. This robust 12.1” Tablet PC solution features both a capacitive touch screen and an active digitizer (pen) panel to allow for highly accurate handwriting input and recognition used in the Mi-Forms software.

According to Josh Kumpf from IDCRP, “Missing or incorrect data is by and large a thing of the past as we can now mandate entry of key information into digital forms. We couldn’t direct attention, highlight blank fields, or ask CRCs to confirm suspect data on traditional paper forms, but we can in a robust computerized system like the one we have built around the Tablet PCs.”

Mr. Kumpf will be discussing the success of their mobile forms solution on April 16th at the Mi-Co PartnerEd Conference 2013 in Durham, NC.

Interested parties can download and read the entire case study by visiting www.tabletkiosk.com/mediaroom/casestudy/cs-idcrp.asp.

80% of our Products Sold are used as Non-Mobile Touchscreen Input Devices

Attractive people having fun at the Blackjacks table.

In today’s super competitive world of consumer-based, media consumption tablets, there still exists a defined niche for our enterprise-based Tablet PCs.  Would you believe that nearly 80% of TabletKiosk products sold are used as non-mobile touchscreen input devices for various industries including Healthcare, Factory Automation, Hospitality and Augmentative Communication?

So if these mobile form factor tablets are being used for non-mobile scenarios, how are they being used and what type of business professionals are using them?  Consider these business scenarios…

      • Attached to a medical cart to access and input EMR records
      • Mounted on a self-contained pedestal in a factory to control the assembly line
      • Permanently affixed to a rolling cart in a school cafeteria for cashless POS
      • Fastened to an electric wheelchair as an augmentative communication device
      • Secured to a forklift to run order fulfillment software
      • Attached to a blackjack or poker table in a casino to run table management software
      • Affixed to a desk in a blood donor center admissions area to run donor questionnaire
      • Secured to a long arm or short arm industrial quilting machine
      • Permanently mounted to a wall for conference room scheduling management
      • Affixed to a cockpit as an electronic flight book
      • And the list goes on…

All TabletKiosk Tablet PCs are designed for business use, and we’ve been manufacturing and distributing enterprise-based Tablet PCs for over 10 years.  We have a long list of legacy customers who have continuously purchased the Sahara Slate PC line (consistently through 4 product generations) since its introduction in 2003.

When our enterprise customers spec out a Tablet PC for their business functions, they require power, speed, reliability and flexibility as well as a full ecosystem of business accessories, to ultimately get the job done. For these TabletKiosk customers who cater to the enterprise marketplace, a consumer-oriented, media consumption device (like an iPad or Android tablet) just isn’t cut out for their business functions.

As the editor of this blog, I use my Sahara Slate PC i550CAD for everyday general computing functions including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, administration of the company’s Salesforce database and social media.  When I’m sitting at my desk, I put my Tablet PC in its docking station and use an external mouse, monitor and keyboard and dock in order to get my work done.  But as one who uses the Sahara Slate PC i500 for everyday computing functions instead of running specialized purpose-based software programs, I know I’m in the minority…

How do you use your Sahara Slate PC?  All responses welcome and we love hearing different scenarios about how are Tablet PCs are being used in the field.

What’s the difference between Resistive and Capacitive Touch Screens?

Here's a well written article from the PC Pro website that describes the differences between Resistive and Capacitive touch screens.  Although this article focuses on the screens used in smartphones, we all know that the screen differences apply to Tablet PCs as well!

Not to complicate matters, but the Sahara Slate PC i500 is available with four "flavors" of screen inputs

2) Capacitive Touch Screen

3) Dual mode Resistive / Wacom Active Digitizer (for handwriting recognition)
Automatically switches between Touch and Pen
